I’ll be at the GOP debate in New Hampshire, June 5

Dear Friends,
Normally I’m not a Republican. Normally I’m not an anything when it comes to politics, but as it so happens, I’ve been a big fan of Ron Paul since 2002, when I saw him on CNBC, giving Alan Greenspan a spanking during the Fed’s Congressional testimony. To make a long story short, when I heard he was running for President, I took it upon myself to set up a website in support of him: www.dailypaul.com. As it turns out, his camp found it, liked it, and invited me to the debate in Manchester NH on June 5.
If you can, please try to watch the debate & listen to what Ron Paul has to say. It will be on CNN at 7pm EDT, probably 4pm on the west coast. If you don’t have cable, you can watch it on cnn.com as well.
Life is a very strange trip indeed.
If you’re interested, please take a look at this short video:
But can he win? He reminds me of McGovern in ‘72
McGovern was of course a Democrat, but he was an embarrassment to the party powers-that-be, who hated him and tried to sabotage him. He was against the Vietnam war, and vowed to bring the troops home on Inaugural Day. At the beginning of the campaign season, McGovern was “George who?” but ended up beating a lot of better known and much better funded candidates because his message resonated with the people. That documentary “One Bright Shining Moment” is an amazing film if you haven’t seen it.
I’ll be interested to hear your comments on the debate, and on Ron Paul. Please feel free to post them below. No need to register to post.
Best regards,

The Dangerous Stranger (1972)

I was born in Seattle in 1968, and started kindergarten in 1973. My early memories include walking to kindergarten with my elder sister, past gas stations with cars lined up around the block. Even as a kid, I think I knew it was kind of a f*cked up time. Watergate, inflation, war in the middle east, Ted Bundy…It all filtered into my little brain from my dad’s 12” black-and-white TV, which was faithfully tuned into the national news each weeknight at six.
When I graduated to first grade, my sister went to middle school. As far as I can remember, my dad walked me to and from school in the first and second grade, but there were times when I had to make the walk alone. Those walks home alone — though just a few blocks — were terrifying. The serial killer Ted Bundy was on the loose in Seattle at the time, and I remember hearing on the news that he was ARMED and DANGEROUS. Be on the lookout, they said, for his blue Volkswagen Beetle.
Boy did I keep a lookout! The sight of any VW Beetle was enough to strike real terror in my gut. My fears of being kidnapped by Bundy were massively amplified by a film they showed us in school called THE DANGEROUS STRANGER. Not only did they show it at school, but if I recall, they also showed it on the JP Patches show as well – Seattle’s local morning kid’s show that everyone watched as they got ready for school. (Such creative local TV programming is unfortunately long gone)
All of these memories washed back over me as I was reading Tamara Draut’s discussion in Strapped: Why America’s 20- and 30-Somethings Can’t Get Ahead, about how kids of my generation (Gen X) basically don’t trust anyone.
On a whim, I decided to look up the Dangerous Stranger to see if it was available online, and sure enough, through the magic of the internet, here it is:
Watching it again after 34 years is strange: They showed this to little kids?! They must have really been trying to scare the sh*t out of them. Honestly, I don’t remember much of it at all, but I sure remember the message: Don’t trust strangers! Don’t trust anyone! It took me decades to unlearn those lessons.
I’m curious to hear from others who saw it, and how it affected them, if at all. Also – do they still show this kind of stuff to kids today?
Comments much appreciated. No need to register to post.

Yes Friends and Thinkers,
It is true. This blog page is closing down for a little bit. I’ve set up a new bulletin board, which can be found here:
http://www.bullnotbull.com/board/
This new bulletin board will take the place of this current blog / conversation area. The spammers are getting to it, and the software needs to be updated. I’m going to do that this week (update the software), after we have all hopefully made the transition over to the new board. Hopefully the update will go smoothly, and this blog will be back up in no time.
In the meantime, I will still be updating the main page with links daily at: www.bullnotbull.com/bull, and hopefully the conversation will continue at the new bulletin board.
You have to register to post at the new board, but hopefully that will help keep the spammers away. Also, there are a number of different categories, so there can be room for a number of different threads going at the same time, and people can start their own threads without waiting around for me. Sometimes I get a little backed up. You can also email each other on the new system, which is a great feature.
At any rate - enjoy the new board. If you have any questions - post them to the Announcements section of the new board. If for whatever reason you can’t get logged in - then either email me, or post something below.
The address for the new bulletin board is very easy to remember: Bull Not Bull dot com, slash Board. Easy like pie:
http://www.bullnotbull.com/board/
In honor of Rich, I started the first thread per his suggestion: Dow 13,000 (though we’re not there yet), Gold $700, (ditto) What next?
(Of course, by the time you read this, we may well be way past both numbers!)
See you there!
Michael
